The Word was there, perhaps in a Motherly form, or a Fatherly form and with clothing. It seems from the context here that the animals were given counterparts. Notice that Adam doesn't name the fish, but only the fowl, and land animals. He may have only named a subset of all the land animals. It appears that God made each animal, and its counterpart, that is, its mate.
