This verse is an introduction to what will later occur, but it gives a basic outline of the garden's purpose. It seems God placed Adam in the garden to complete him, and to also discipline him. There is no woman as of yet, and we know from chapter one, in God's image made he him, male and female made he them. Now I assert that this garden is not the Land we know it as, but is in an invisible place to our human eyes. It is somehow connected to the earth we see, but it is not the same, and Adam currently has the ability to see it, but after the fall, and because sin abounds we have lost that ability.
